OTTO….”Putting Class in Trash”
"We put Class into Trash" was the motto under which the event of the Nov. 7, 2007 was organized in the facilities of Otto Industries. This is truly an impressive company, one of the largest producer of trash cans. 95,000,000 carts (as they call the rash cans) produced by OTTO are dispersed all over the world.
They opened their production facilities to us showing impressive huge plastic injection molding machines. They are in process of drastically increasing their cycle times of the trash cans from 185 to 57 seconds. It was a special honor that the Chairman of OTTO worldwide Luc Muller attended the event with his wife.
They were very generous hosts offering a nice German-oriented buffet and drinks. We are grateful to the OTTO team (in particular Stephen, David, Kirsti and Nori as well as the plant managers Cooper and Rich, and of course Luc) for arranging such a nice and informative evening.

Rödl's First Grand Prix
What an astounding success! An unprecedented two weeks before the event was taking place it was booked out to the last space. Jeff Gordon and Michael Schumacher move over! New talents are taking over!
The event took place in the indoor Victory Karting Lane, just seven minutes outside of Charlotte's city center. Modeled after the Schumacher go-kart courses in Germany and equipped with true German go-karts the racing was tough and (mostly) fair. More than 60 members and friends congregated to attend this exciting event; the course was reserved for us for three hours exclusively.
Good news: the Director of the GACC N.C. Chapter considerably improved from the last place in his first run to the last-to-the-last place in his second run.
A BIG Thank-You to Rödl/Langford de Kock: not only did the company sponsor this event with a significant amount, but Rick's new assistant Rachel excelled in putting all the details of the event together. Thank you also Stefanie who feels more and more comfortable in her role as Event Manager.

Germany's Third 'Wirtschaftswunder'?
A Discussion and Dinner with Frank Hornig, New York Correspondent, Der Spiegel
Frank Hornig, reporter for DER SPIEGEL in New York came to Charlotte yesterday just for our GACC event. After a Champagne reception, about 65 attending people enjoyed a nice dinner in the elegant Piper Glen Country Club. After dinner, Mr. Hornig spoke to the topic: “Germany’s Third Wirtschaftswunder?”
Our Sponsor Lufthansa not only supported the event by inviting guests of their own to the event but also provided a transatlantic ticket to be raffled away. Everybody was of the opinion that is was a very successful evening.

The Arequipa Day
The N.C. Chapter of the GACC-South very much considers itself as a very integral part of the international community. Therefore, we partnered up with Charlotte’s Sister City Committee which was welcoming a delegation of Charlotte’s sister city in Peru: Arequipa. The event took place in the new Jerald Melberg Gallery.

YEC Event.
It was the idea of our board member Dirk Koltze to organize a YEC event in Charlotte for the first time which was, of course, a success. It took place at the Piper Glen Country Club which offered some tee-off possibilities for upcoming golfers besides hors-d’œuvres and refreshments.
The YEC event will offer more people the opportunity to learn about the easy way of communicating with each other and the event will be a feature again on our program calendar next year again, possibly at a different location.

What a Success: Johnson & Wales in Charlotte.
The event was sponsored by the honorable CPA firm Greer and Walker who generously provided the catering. Tracy Pardue Brener was as representative of Johnson & Wales the key note speaker. Many in Charlotte do not know that J&W is one of the three culinary leading universities in the country and that already in the second year more than 2000 students graduated from this prestigious school.

The White Asparagus Feast.
It is always a gamble to introduce a new event in the year’s program: will people attend? will they like it? should we organize it again? No worries what concerns The White Asparagus Feast. Only a “save-the-date-note” was sent out and more than the allocated 28 seats were sold. The festive event took place on the mezzanine of the ritzy new restaurant TABLE in Ballantyne’s. A five course meal –of course, dedicated to the white asparagus- was served and was a full success. This event yearns for a repetition in 2008.

Presentation of the Gateway Award.
Again, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany Hans-Jörg Brunner came up from Atlanta to present the prestigious The Gateway Award to a company which had earned merits for the German-American trade relationship. For the first time, a German company was honored: American Truetzschler which is one of the most innovative producers of textile machinery in the world. Its president Kurt Scholler accepted the award and gave a witty thank-you speech. The Gateway Award has become a firm feature in the yearly program of the N.C. Chapter of the GACC-South and its limited seating capacity has always been sold out.
Next year’s Award Ceremony is planned for April 16 and we certainly do hope that the new Consul General will continue the tradition to present the award.
We certainly thank our generous sponsor Ernst & Young to have supported this event for the third time and we were assured by its partner Markus Schlüter that he will sponsor it again in 2008. Many thanks to this company.
