German Shipbuilding, Maritime and Offshore Technology Delegation to the Gulf of Mexico, USA

From June 4 - 8, 2018, a five-day business delegation to the Gulf Coast region of the Southern US will take place. The trip is geared towards German companies engaged in the shipbuilding and offshore industries.

With this business delegation, the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Energy (BMWi) is supporting German SMEs from the industry with their foreign trade engagement through the targeted development and expansion of business contacts in the USA. The business delegation will uncover market opportunities and potentially generate long-term sales opportunities for the participants.

Overview of the Shipbuilding industry in the Southern USA

In the USA, shipbuilding primarily takes place in several hubs along the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River, and on the Great Lakes. Florida (Miami), Louisiana (New Orleans), Washington (Seattle), California (San Diego), and Texas (Houston) are the leading states in the shipbuilding industry with a concentration of industrial activity in each of the states listed.

The ocean carrier business in the USA is also important to the shipbuilding supplier industry, and has further areas of emphasis in the US, such as in New York. For the cruise ship industry, Florida is especially important. The barge and inland water vessel industry also plays an important role, with considerably larger ships and tugboats than in the European barge industry.

Houston remains the worldwide largest oil market hub. Due to low oil prices, offshore firms are subject to cost reduction measures to lower the enormous costs of drilling oil wells, and will place stronger value than previously on product reliability, low-maintenance service and security by implementing digital technologies, among other methods. Due to the large geographic area covered in the shipbuilding industry, the delegation will focus on the Gulf Coast region from Houston to Miami.
