ZF Transmissions Gray Court and the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern U.S. (GACC South) discussed challenges and opportunities of Industry 4.0 with experts from all over the U.S. in South Carolina.

Industry 4.0 is considered as the next phase in the digitization of the manufacturing sector and brings along many opportunities and challenges especially for manufacturers. North and South Carolina are home to numerous advanced manufacturing and automotive related companies, especially of German origin. As German companies are considered as the pioneers in this new era of advanced manufacturing, why not provide a platform for companies to exchange and to learn from each other?

The idea was initiated by Thomas Joos, Vice President at ZF Transmissions Gray Court and Dr. Henning O. Bruns, General Manager at Daimler Trucks North America and North Carolina Chapter Director of the GACC South and finally lead to a whole-day conference with 70 attendees and speakers from ZF Transmissions, Siemens Industry, Detroit Diesel Corporation, the Boston Consulting Group and Balluff. The overall goal of the event was to give the attending companies the opportunity to get a better understanding of what the topic really means, to compare their progress in smart manufacturing with others and to get a feeling for the broad range of opportunities and challenges that come along with it.

One highlight of the conference was the tour through the ZF Transmissions manufacturing plant where the company displayed how Industry 4.0 is already applied in the current manufacturing and assembly progress of automatic transmission. A panel discussion in the afternoon allowed participants to dig a little deeper into the topic and to learn directly from the panelists how to deal with data analytics and data selection, internal change management and the shift in skills requirements.

“In order to grow, we need nutrition and we get the nutrition on events like these when we exchange with others”, concluded Joos at the end of the conference. The GACC South is planning to continue the discussion on technology related topics in partnership with other bigger manufacturers in the future. “We want to offer companies the platform for future oriented discussions that help them in becoming more successful”, Bruns.
